Why Good Mental Wellbeing Makes Life Better

"You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, and how you can still come out of it." - Maya Angelou

Having good mental health and wellness allows for easier navigation through life, but this in no way means feeling good or happy all the time. Good mental health allows us to feel comfort and calmness when we feel down, helps us cope with grief, uncertainty, and transitional periods in life. It helps us build and maintain relationships with other people (friends, partners, etc.) and learn from mistakes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) definition of good mental health is to be in a "state of wellbeing", where one can recognize what feels good and is functional and efficiently productive in daily life. This does not mean one must be without a mental illness diagnosis. In fact, persons with a diagnosed mental illness can exude good mental health by coping with normal life stressors, and having the capacity to contribute to the community.

Everyone faces challenges in life, but people actively trying to attain good mental health have a higher likelihood of having the propensity to cope with life's trials.
